GRAPE POP TOP

A compact, multi-purpose addition.

CHALLENGE

The home had great bones, but this 1950’s ranch home was feeling a bit claustrophobic with so many small rooms. The homeowners, Tim and Heather, had recently renovated the kitchen and living room, but knew additional space was needed. While the house was structurally sound and in an ideal location, the lot was small and suffered from an abnormally high water table.

Greg and Uitto Design Workshop quickly identified the limiting factors and risks involved with an addition to the existing home, and designed an assembly that provided the necessary balance of private and public spaces while blending seamlessly with the existing home.

APPROACH

Before sketching out the first conceptual design, the homeowners were asked to complete a thorough Programming Questionnaire. This completed document would be a reference manual throughout the entire project. Uitto Design Workshop also conducted a Feasibility Study that clearly identified the project and property limits. The design Team reflected on and referenced the Project Questionnaire against the Feasibility Study to quickly arrive at a design solution that met Tim & Heather’s goals.

RESULTS

Tim and Heather and their family have distinct places to gather and retreat. They have the ‘elbow room’ they always dreamed of. Now they enjoy the ability to simultaneously entertain friends (loud spaces) and have a quiet conversation. Individualized finishes and art establish unique experiences and settings within the home. A neutral color palate of stucco and painted brick along with exterior wood siding from reclaimed snow fencing ties the entire home together in a cohesive fashion. Every room has an abundance of natural light, while maintaining privacy within the home. Indoor and outdoor rooms offer a variety of experiences in a compact setting.
