CEDAR GARAGE ADDITION

The do-everything addition.

CHALLENGE

The original 4 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,300 square foot home in central Boulder was constructed in 1955 for a family of 6. While the home had aged well, there was potential left on the table. The current homeowners, Greg and Kristen and their 4 young kids loved the little house. They loved that the house had a great yard and was located in a fantastic neighborhood, but were quickly running out of elbow room. The lack of an existing garage, carport, or even a driveway hampered storage and complicated daily activities.

Greg and Uitto Design Workshop opened the conversation up to the bigger question….how could a Garage addition be more than a Garage?

APPROACH

Greg and Uitto Design Workshop spent many meetings discussing and simultaneously sketching the first conceptual designs. The dialogues over months revealed a lot about day to day family activities that needed accommodation in the new addition. Ultimately, the plans were optimized to include an upper level family room and guest suite over the new garage. A new mudroom addition would anchor the Garage to the existing home and act as a hub for day to day life. A new, timber framed front porch was proposed to add another “room” for relaxing with the neighborhood. Uitto Design Workshop helped to identify a General Contractor perfectly suited for the project and it’s budget.

RESULTS

Greg and Kristen, their family, and guests have unique spaces for gatherings as well quiet moments of solitude. They have the ‘elbow room’ required for a busy family of 6. Durable finishes and a quiet color palate serve as the backdrop to the kids’ artwork throughout the home. The upper level Family Room and Guest Suite feel like a tree house with its clear finished, Baltic Birch ceilings throughout and large windows overlooking the yard. The window seat wrapped in steel cladding, cantilevers out, stretching towards the mountains beyond. Every room is flooded in natural light, while maintaining privacy within the home. Many afternoons and evenings are spent hanging out on the front porch, enjoying the yard and neighborhood.
